MoMA - De Stijl Tumbling Tower

Boys and their toys! Well this isn’t a sports car but this game is a popular fun way to spend an evening and looks great in your home, like a Piet Mondrian sculpture. The MoMA De Stijl Tumbling Tower was designed by Monica Albornoz through MoMA's collaboration with the MFA Products of Design program at the School of Visual Arts. “MoMA Exclusive: This take on the classic game brings the aesthetics of the De Stijl movement—with its bright primary colors and geometric shapes—to life in 3D form. Think of it as an interactive Mondrian painting. To play, build a tower by stacking three side by side blocks in each row, alternating 90 degrees with each layer. Players take turns removing a block from the tower and placing it on top. The composition evolves as each player makes their mark. The last player to successfully remove and stack a block without the tower falling wins the game. The game ends when the tower falls. Made of sustainably harvested rubberwood. For two or more players. Measures 12”h x 3”w x 3”d.”

ORNAMENTS FOR ORPHANS - FELT WOOL GOLF BAG ORNAMENT

So when you buy this as a gift so many people around the world are winning.

BOY SMELLS - COWBOY KUSH CANDLE

A candle is always a good gift and we love BOY SMELLS candle company from Los Angeles. The company is dedicated to scents that go beyond the gender binary. Cowboy Kush is a spell-binding, masculine scent that would elevate any area of smells of well-worn leather of spiced patchouli with puffs of pot.. “Just like enjoying a joint at the rodeo, this tumbleweed of a scent is a rustic accumulation of soft suede and spiced saffron with puffs of pot leaf and patchouli floating through. Earthy, grounded, it is warm and well-worn like a saddle with notes of tonka bean and patchouli. A best seller and for good reason, enjoy riding off into your own olfactive sunset.”

We tried for the first time hosting an evening with men from all backgrounds to give us their opinions of the gift suggestions we had and these were the gifts that were 100% approved based on their uniqueness, craftsmanship and price points. Plus the added benefit that all the brands are small and specialize in artisanal products. A good feedback we received when presenting our picks were, “I would be so happy to receive these gifts and would appreciate the thought that went into getting me a gift that I would appreciate”. So if that is the feeling you want the man in your life to have we recommend our gift choices or as a suggestion so you can shop locally in your neighborhood for something as special. There is always a small, local artisanal brand near you hoping you will see beyond the Amazons of this world and large scale department stores to relish the specialness of beautifully crafted gift.

Artisanal gifts guarantee a thoughtful and unique gift that will have her feeling appreciated and adored. So click onto the captions for the links as all the suggestions are also available on their online shops.

GUZEMA - “LIGHT MY FIRE” BOLD EXTINGUISHER PENDANT

It’s quite a grand start and our most expensive in this gift guide but we fell in love with Guzema and the unique jewelry pieces they create. Guzema was founded in 2016 in Ukraine by Valeriya Guzema. Guzema started out her business by melting the gold teeth her grandfather bequeathed her. From there her business has grown and has represented Ukrainian culture and arts. We adore the “Light My Fire” fire extinguisher pendant which comes in both white and yellow 18k gold (chain length is 68 cm). It’s definitely a conversation starter and a piece that will eventually become a family heirloom.

SABAH - CIN CIN SABAH LOAFER

Sabah, which means “morning” in Turkish was founded in 2013 by an American expat who missed the leather slippers he wore while working in Istanbul. By collaborating with Turkish artisans who have been creating the leather slippers since the late 1800’s. Years later Sabah’s come in all colors and are made for men, women and children. We love the gold “Cin Cin” as it can go from day to evening all the whilst leaving your feet stylish AND comfortable. The shoes are entirely handmade in Turkey and are sturdy yet flexible hand-stitched sole construction with a soft leather lining (no socks, no problem!). Water buffalo leather insole & midsole, forms to feet with replaceable rubber outsole to ensure longevity. The shoes are also lightweight, packable and perfect for travel. So why not give her the gift of a stylish, fun shoe AND comfort. It’s one of the easiest ways to keep a smile on a woman, comfortable feet.

FRASSAI - TEISENDDU EAU DE PARFUM

Frassai is a fragrance brand founded by Argentinian Natalia Outeda who uses the fragrance as an olfactory journal of her adventures and travels. We picked Teissenddu Eau de Parfum as we feel it’s the perfect perfume for the holidays with notes of: Bitter orange, Rum, Juniper, Nutmeg, Mimosa, Dark sugar crystals, Leather. We love the story of this particular fragrance:

May 1865. 153 Welsh emigrants set sail on an old converted tea clipper, the Mimosa, bound for the rugged wilds of Patagonia. With dreams of establishing a new settlement, they arrived in Porth Madryn after a voyage of 7,000 miles. Generations later, their journey still bears an indelible imprint on the region that became their new home. Inspired by the Welsh settlers’ torta negra (black cake), TEISENDDU is a fragrant celebration of Welsh tradition fused with the arid landscape of Patagonia. Warm spices, bitter orange and juniper greet the senses like a cozy Welsh tearoom. A delicious heart of dried fruit and nuts is macerated in rum and enveloped by honeyed mimosa, while an intriguing blend of leather and dark sugar crystals completes the recipe, lingering like warm memories shared over a cup of black tea. An unforgettable scent.

MARIA DE LA ORDEN - NAT JERSEY

We discovered this brand from Madrid a few years ago and just love the fun the designer has with color, patterns and embellishments. As an owner of their cashmere I highly recommend this emerald green sweater that is perfect for holiday parties. It is the antithesis of the ugly Christmas sweater, it’s the soft and luxurious green holiday sweater. Nat Jersey is an oversized high neck jumper in cashmere with side slits. Composed of 100% pure Mongolian cashmere, this luxurious jumper is as thick as soft thanks to its 4-ply knitting.

STEFKA - STEFKA SLOUCHY TOTE

Whether you’re heading to the office, a coffee shop, or a weekend getaway, this tote effortlessly combines practicality with a laid-back aesthetic. The first run of this bag will be using a natural unfinished vegetable tanned leather. It is absolutely buttery soft and also a very light bag. So it doesn’t come with a lot of weight to it. Will come with imperfections and become more beautiful over time. Suede option comes with leather straps. Choose the color bag and straps. If you want it all monochrome just choose the same 2 colors. Made to order in NYC, please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery. 14”w x 11”h x 6”d D d rings to attach crossbodyInner pocket. Hook closure.

elan florist - small holiday reds

With that we recommend Laderach, a Swiss chocolate brand founded in the 1960’s and is well known for their chocolate specialties. Elias Läderach, their Master Chocolatier is the only Swiss chocolatier to have earned the title “World Chocolate Master.” Experience his award-winning creations and specialities like FrischSchoggi Sticks Christmas. A candle is a sweet and affordable way to show her you are thinking of her during the holidays. For this holiday the Peppermint & Eucalyptus Soy Candle from the Queer Candle Co. smells like the holidays and the fresh winter outdoors. One other important benefit from buying a candle from the Queer Candle Co. is how they give back to the QTBIPOC community:

As a trans and queer owned business, it's important to us that our profits promote visibility and amplify the voices of members of our community - specifically the voices of QTBIPOC folks. We contribute 10% of our profits to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, an NYC based grassroots organization working to "guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence.

THE REJUVENATION OF CANAL STREET: FROM A COUNTERFEIT DESTINATION TO A SMALL BRAND UTOPIA

If you live in New York City or have traveled to NYC as a tourist, chances are you may have visited the Canal Street area of downtown Manhattan. This is a street that was originally built on a canal that ran from east to west of downtown Manhattan and runs through Soho, Tribeca, Chinatown and the Lower East Side. In the last few decades Canal Street has become notorious as a destination for many tourists (and locals) to visit the many souvenir shops selling NYC paraphernalia. However it has also unfortunately morphed into a destination for selling counterfeit products, such as handbags, sneakers, belts, watches, etc. However in the last few years since lockdown from Covid, the span of Canal Street from West Broadway to Broadway has redeveloped into a destination for young brands that has breathed new life with legitimate and very stylish brands proving a neighborhood can reinvent itself.

What is wrong with Canal Street? Canal Street is a destination where tourists are dropped by in tour buses so they can shop the NYC souvenir shops. What ends up happening is that whether they know it or not, these tourists (and locals) end up supporting an illegal counterfeit industry. While Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Louis Vuitton are just a few blocks away from Canal Street, many of the tourists think they have scored a bargain by buying counterfeit products of these very brands by paying way less than the retail price.

In the last two years the mayor’s office has been organizing raids on these counterfeiters where hundreds of thousands of dollars of product is confiscated and destroyed. Before these recent raids, Canal Street was unashamedly displaying the counterfeit products to the point it was difficult to walk the sidewalks. Now with the occasional raids, the sellers of these illegal wares are more discreet by hiding the products in garbage bags. The police cannot do anything if the product is in the garbage bags but as soon as the product comes out an arrest can be made. You see a well honed operation going on all day of men, primarily African immigrants bringing carts of these bags full of counterfeit items from Manhattan Mini Storage, a well known storage facility near by that has multiple locations in New York. They go back and forth each day, from early morning to the evening carting their illegal wares.

African immigrants line Canal Street selling counterfeit products hidden from their bags.

There are two types of sellers hawking counterfeit product on Canal Street, one is the fore mentioned African immigrants who display their products on the sidewalks and in their garbage bags and the other are mainly Asians who show you pictures of counterfeit handbags and then take you to the back of a souvenir shop (not all souvenir shops on Canal Street operate illegal counterfeit products) where you can pay up to a few hundred dollars for top end counterfeit bags. I have also seen this near exact operation in London and Florence, in their high end shopping districts.

Some of the souvenir shops that dot Canal Street.

What these tourists and even locals who come to Canal Street to shop for counterfeit products are not aware of is the underbelly of the counterfeit world. Most of the attention about counterfeit products laments the lost of revenue and the design theft of the brand involved. This leaves out the most important elements of counterfeit products and that is who creates the illegitimate products and the organized crime lords who profit from these illegal sales.

While people may think they are sticking it to the brand for producing overpriced items, buying counterfeit products comes off the backs of an illegal workforce. Many of those members of this illegitimate workforce are children, trafficked in unsafe factories around the world, mainly in Asia who do not have the government making sure human rights practices are being observed. Even the workforce that are not children are still not working in safe conditions and paid fairly with many of their rights as workers swept under the table. It’s fair to say it’s another form of modern day slavery overseen by international criminals. Click here for a great article in Harper’s Bazaar on the hard facts and dark side of fakes. It was part of my responsibilities as a product developer and production manager for large retail brands to make sure we passed all social compliance regulations to make sure our products were not made from children and all workers were paid fairly, with all their rights as workers intact. In the end you have to ask yourself, “I’m I willing to help contribute to child labor for a fake bag, sneaker or watch?”

The Real Real, a company that purchases legitimate second hand high-end items and sells them mainly through a website with some stores around the country, has recently created a sham storefront on Canal Street that you cannot enter with a display of counterfeit bags from the illegitimate sales of bags on Canal Street. It is done as a protest against counterfeit items yet it fails to educate the public to what goes on behind buying illegal counterfeit items. The high-end brands and The Real Real are mainly concerned about their revenue loss and downplay the human rights issues with counterfeiting. Between this stunt from The Real Real and the lack of education from the mayor’s office, the counterfeit the industry is still strong on Canal Street from Broadway to the Bowery. Luckily on Canal Street from Broadway to West Broadway is another story with many facets both positive and negative.

The sham The Real Real storefront on Canal Street

New York City has a landscape that is in constant change which may that be for the best or the worst. Real estate developers seem to run this town which have made affordable housing not readily available and very unimaginative building designs coming up all over the city making for very odd city scapes. That said communities do come together and occasionally start evolving for the better. In recent years since the lockdown, many of the souvenir shops on Canal Street from Broadway heading west to West Broadway have been slowly replaced one by one by storefronts with young brands selling everything from art to home decor to apparel. You can now walk on the sidewalks without being harassed by counterfeit vendors and visit shop after shop of a well curated selection of small brands. Some of the utilitarian shops on Canal Street are still there and very much needed, like Canal Street Plastics and Canal Street Lighting.

Canal Street Lights has an incredible array of lightbulbs.

Canal Plastics Center has been around for decades and has been an invaluable source for local artists.

Get your disco ball at Canal Sound and light.

What was an embarrassment has slowly evolved into a new community that attracts more unique designers who believe in shopping local and shopping small. Here are some of the brands that have rejuvenated Canal Street and Soho.

Roman and William Guild

Although there is entrance on Howard Street (along with an incredible restaurant, La Mercerie) there is also an entrance on Canal Street between Broadway and Mercer Street. Roman and Williams Guild is the brainchild of Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch who are world renowned interior designers and with this store are sharing their aesthetics of high-end home decor. The store offers a treasure trove of items and furniture from around the globe. Although quite pricey, it is worth visiting alone to see the amazing selection of products made from artisans around the world.

GALLERY GUIDES

Gallery Guide, 317 Canal Street, NYC

Gallery Guides has nothing to do with galleries but it is a very colorful shop that offers sports jerseys from all different sports at very affordable prices. Since there are so many stores nearby with very expensive sneakers it helps that you can get your jerseys for a better price.

GUILD GALLERY

Roman and Williams decided to take advantage of the available storefronts nearby and opened up an art gallery that features artists and artisans they have worked with from around the world.

CLASSIC FOOTBALL SHIRTS

Classic Football Shirts is a brand that offers football (soccer) shirts from teams all over the world for men, women and children. A little bit more expensive than Gallery Guides but way more offerings and more official.

MAXHOSA

MAXHOSA AFRICA, a South African knitwear brand founded in 2010 by Laduma Ngxokolo, originating in the desire to explore knitwear design solutions suitable for amakrwala (Xhosa initiates). Using traditional Xhosa beadwork patterns, symbolism and colors, Maxhosa showcases the beauty, culture, language and aspiration of the Xhosa people of Africa.

DRAKE’S

Drake’s was founded by Michael Drake in East London in 1977. Fast forward 2024 in NYC, under the guidance of Creative Director Michael Hill, Drake's produces soft tailoring in Italy, traditional knitwear in Scotland, shirts in their own shirt factory in Chard, Somerset, alongside premium jersey and an expansive range of outerwear, accessories and Selvedge denim. Drake’s also does “made to order”. You would never have suspected just a few years ago for such a luxury destination on Canal Street.

NORDIC KNOTS

Nordic Knots is a contemporary rug shop that fuses function and aesthetics with a Scandinavian sensibility that craft timeless textiles for the modern home.

CANAL PROJECTS

The art world is coming back to Soho, along Canal Street. Canal Projects is a non-profit contemporary art institution dedicated to supporting international artists at pivotal moments in their careers.

KNICKERBOCKER

Knickerbocker, A men’s New York based brand founded by Andrew Livingston in 2013, has a fusion of classic American style with layered elements of art, music, sports emphasizing tradition, utility and purpose. The bookstore along is worth visiting Knickerbocker.

MERZ B. SCHWANEN

Merz B Schwanen is a Berlin based brand founded in 1911 and reinvented by Gitta and Peter Plotnicki in 2011 based on creating a wardrobe using sustainable methods including up cycling second hand clothes and reviving the loop wheelers that created the original brand.

HAPPIER GROCERY

A new type of local grocery store has opened up that includes a bakery, sushi, pizzeria, groceries of hard to find brands, beverages, merchandise, flowers and even a magazine section that carried zingmagazine which had the issue I curated a section on! Love this place!

SEA

This women’s brand was founded by Sean Monahan and Monica Paolini combining Monica’s eye for vintage-feeling pieces and Sean’s leaning towards more modern, clean styles. The mix of lace, trimming, embroidery and technical fabrics have provided a unique collection.

STELLAR WORKS

Stellar Works is a furniture brand established in 2012 that focuses on fusing two ideas together: East and West, heritage and modernity, craft and industry along with sustainability in their methods of creation.

If you should ever visit Canal Street as a resident or tourist I would hope that you would seek out this more positive side of Canal Street west of Broadway and have a new enlightened view of the dangers and dark side of the counterfeit trade. The future of the east side of Canal Street I believe is going to mirror the west side little by little. What will accelerate this will be when the general public is no longer ignorant of the blatant criminality and human rights violation of counterfeit products. Right now brands highlight the financial loss and design theft which does not galvanize society. The city and mayor of NYC can help educate the public with awareness campaigns and Community Boards can also help by doing what they do best, closing down places when people complain. The best way to help for now is to spread the news and walk on by.

THE LOCAL ARTISAN'S GUIDE TO FATHER'S DAY GIFTS - 2024

This year for The Local Artisan Guide’s Father’s Day gift recommendations we asked some fathers what they would like to get as gifts then we researched and matched artisanal brands that fit our ethos (and dads would love). What made it easier for us this year is that we were heavily inspired by our annual trip upstate New York to Kingston, where we visited the “Field & Supply Spring Market. Field & Supply is a heavily curated modern makers market that spotlights local brands in categories of apparel, accessories, home decor, beauty & wellness, jewelry and more. As we explored the beautiful tented grounds located right on the picturesque Hudson River, we were greatly inspired by the local brands and the stories of their makers. The different cuisines of the food stalls made for a great day escape from the city. We gladly picked some of their makers for our Father’s Day gift guide from their new online shop to make it easy for you to shop artisanal gifts for dad. We encourage you greatly to check out the Field & Supply site and possibly visit their outdoor markets, which will certainly inspire you to shop local and artisanal, especially for dear old dad (or any dad figure in your life).

A view of Field & Supply in upstate NY in Kingston along the beautiful Hudson River.

THE BIG GREEN EGG 10” MINI CHARCOAL KAMADO GRILL & SMOKER IN GREEN

For generations fathers have loved grilling on the iconic Big Green Egg. A grill was a popular Father’s Day choice from those dads we asked what they would like, so we chose the Big Green Egg is now available in a mini 10 inch form that makes it easy to take it on picnics, your apartment balcony, vacations, boating, camping and more! What makes the Big Green Egg in mini form so special is featured in it’s copy:

“The Big Green Egg is the highest quality, most versatile and simplest-to-use outdoor cooker available, offering more cooking options than all other conventional cookers combined. Grill, roast, smoke, sear and bake the EGG does all this and more!

  1. Quick and easy to start - reaches cooking temperature and is ready to use in minutes

  2. Precisely control the temperature by easily adjusting the patented air flow systems. The calibrated temperature gauge provides precise readings from 150 to 750F.

  3. An EGG retains heat and moisture so well that foods don’t dry out. Your food is naturally tastier because the EGG is a completely natural way to cook, and youll appreciate the difference at your first bite.

  4. The Big Green Egg is fueled by 100% natural hardwood for superb performance and flavor. Your food will have a natural and wholesome quality without any chemical aftertaste.

  5. Best-In-Class limited lifetime warranty your investment is protected by a successful company with a worldwide reputation for unmatched customer service.

  6. Weight: 39 lbs”

HAPPY BOARD, THE CLASSIC CHARCUTERIE

What was another popular request from dads? Meat! So we recommend “Happy Boards”, a charcuterie shop located in the Lower East Side, NY that offers an array of charcuterie boards. You can go to their website and order the charcuterie board of your choice. We like “The Classic Charcuterie” that includes: Truffle Pecorino, Gouda, Triple Cream Brie, genoa salami, spicy coppa, fig jam, herb-infused honey, mixed nuts, caperberries, seasonal dried and fresh fruits, and seasonal vegetables. Includes a box of assorted crackers (optional). Designed to serve 2-3 people. If you are not in New York City, many places offer a variation of what Happy Boards offers as we advise it is always best to shop local.

FIELD + SUPPLY, HAND-PAINTED KRAFT SPIRAL NOTEBOOK

Field + Supply offers the carefully crafted objects from WMS & CO., a brand that offers everyday objects elevated by design and influenced by history. We think dad would like this Kraft notebook to be used as a journal or someplace to keep his notes and thoughts. “The artist’s way is to have a little notebook always at hand, ready to accept ideas big and small. Each of these Kraft cardstock-covered notebooks is a unique work of sweetly naïve modern art, hand-painted, and hand-bound on a vintage press in a small Iowa studio. Spiral bound with burnished copper wire. 50 pages of thick bright white uncoated paper stock. 7.5 x 9.75". Ruled.”

FIELD + SUPPLY, ROAD TO NOWHERE, MEN’S SANTOS JACKET

Field + Supply offers the apparel collection of “Road to Nowhere”, a sustainable clothing brand for men and women located in Montauk, NY where the clothes are effortlessly stylish, comfortable, and ethically produced. We think the “Santos Jacket” will bring dad’s style level up ten fold. Made in Los Angeles, the Santos Jacket was designed from a favorite vintage painter's coat. Made from the signature Bemberg™ fabric, this jacket is as comfortable as it is versatile.  Wear it open as a jacket or button it up as a stand alone shirt.

FIELD + SUPPLY, WICKERS CREEK, SACRED EMBER SCENTED CANDLE

For a gift that is easy for dad to transport we recommend Field + Supply, Wickers Creek Sacred Ember Scented Candle. Wickers Creek is a Hudson, NY based candle company with a reverence for heritage craftsmanship. Their candles are all anchored by the slow burn of master crafters working in small batches. The 14 oz. hand-poured candle in reusable metal showpiece is the first of a wide array of Wickers Creek products launching soon. For dad we know he will love the Ember Scented Candle which using a sensual mix of sweet orris and smoky copal, it celebrates the ritual of gathering around the fire. “Nature’s silence paired with the crackle of aged wood, the unmistakable scent of dry heat, and the wild spirit of the flame.”

  • Reusable metal vessel

  • Hand-poured, plant-based wax blend

  • Average burn time 55-60 hours

  • 14oz (396g).

FIELD + SUPPLY, FLORA BEAUTY, COGNAC + TOBACCO GROOMING OIL

On the more affordable side of the spectrum of gift giving for dad is skincare for keeping dad’s skin looking soft, supple and youthful. In the last few years men have been catching up with women in wellness and the benefits of taking care of your skin. Gone are the days when a man would just slap some drying cologne on their skin and call it a day. Flora, a beauty and wellness brand based in Kingston, NY Flora honors this tradition with its line of natural, artisanal beauty treatments for hair, face, and body, crafted utilizing the highest-quality ingredients, selected without limitations of cost. Their Grooming Oil is, “A blend of organic Argan Oil and Borage Oil. Use to hydrate and soften facial hair and moisturize skin. Reduce inflammation in the hair follicles that can occur from the abrasiveness of shaving. Moisturizes hair and replenishes a dry scalp. The scent is sweet tobacco and cognac reminiscent of your grandfather’s humidor.”

FIELD + SUPPLY, MOSES NADEL, WEIGHTED PERISPHERE BALL

If your father is into sports we found the perfect artisanal gift, this Weighted Perisphere Ball from Moses Nadel. We love this gift as it can be either used as a medicine ball or home decor because it is such a beautiful work of art. “Inspired by traditional medicine balls, these unique objects have weight to them. They are as much a decorative work of art as an actual plaything to complete your training routine.

  • Each ball is a hand cut each 5-sided panel from select hides of American Buffalo and recycled weighted fill

  • Each piece is finished with traditional hand-lacing

  • Weights slightly vary

  • Materials: American Buffalo Leather. Recycled weighted fill.”

FIELD + SUPPLY, KC-KO, SINGLE WRAP MEN’S BRACELET

Another affordable Father’s Day gift we found on the Field + Supply online store is this nice piece of masculine jewelry from KC-KO, s small local brand that offers small-batch leather goods, hand-made in NYC. The Single Wrap Bracelet (burgundy waxed) comes in three sizes and they even offer the option of having it monogrammed for an additional $8. We love this for dad!

RICHARD WRIGHTMAN, FOLDING OFFICER’S FIELD CHAIR

And we end our last Father's Day gift with the ultimate artisan gift for dad we highly recommend this piece of campaign furniture from furniture designer Richard Wrightman. This Folding Officer’s Chairs made to order and offers a variety of material options. Richard Wrightman designs have all been inspired by campaign furniture (furniture the military in the past used while on a military campaign) and besides the well constructed folding chair, this piece comes with it’s own carefully crafted wooden box. You (or dad) can customize the design by choosing the wood, leather and fabric for this particular design. The dimensions are 20” W x 28” D x 27.5” H Seat Height: 8” Price is upon request once you chose the materials for this one of kind, once in a lifetime gift for dad that he will not only treasure but gladly use.

That is The Local Artisan Guide’s recommendation for Father’s Day 2024. We hope you explore Field + Supply as they are a great source for locally curated artisan products for all. I thank the dads that gave me their suggestions on what they would like to receive for Father’s Day. I wish all the men who are fathers and father figures a happy Father’s Day, providing for and creating a safe and loving family is the really the gift that keeps on giving.

THE LOCAL ARTISAN GUIDE TO MOTHER'S DAY GIFTS 2024

Another year, another blog on great Mother’s Day gift recommendations on The Local Artisan Guide. As always we offer curated selections that are artisanal, sustainable with stores that offer small independent brands created by artisans. Your mother will appreciate that you have given great thought to unique gifts that show how much you care. No robe from Sears here! All are available online just click onto the captions under the photos.

Rothy’s has been a longtime favorite of The Local Artisan Guide for years. The brand has been at the forefront of offering stylish footwear made from recycled materials that are comfortable and easy to clean. We are again recommending Rothy’s for this Mother’s Day as they just introduced espadrilles! Imagine a comfortable and stylish espadrille that is also made from recycled materials? We couldn’t resist! Rothy’s offers the espadrille in many colors and patterns so mom will have so many choices.

In our recent trip to San Miguel de Allende we fell in love with Mexican White Ceramics for home decor. The beautiful creamy glaze is perfect for all decor and color schemes. Made my local artisans of Mexico, Marquesa de Mancera offers a stunning and affordable selection of the ceramics. I guarantee your mother will be happy to have one of these handmade, artfully created pieces in her home.

If your mother loves jewelry (whose mother doesn’t) we selected this lovely necklace of multicolored gemstones from Dana Blair Design. Dana Blair always designs not only with aesthetics in mind but how the energy of the gems affect our lives. “This necklace is inspired by the meanings of the 27 individually wrapped stones used to create it. With its myriad colors, the Symbolic necklace pairs so well with any ensemble that you’ll never want to take it off. It looks great alone or layered with other necklaces. Available in 14k gold fill or sterling silver, on a 17″ chain.” All those colors will definitely fit in with mom’s wardrobe.

Res Ispa (legalese for “the thing speaks for itself”) is a brand that focuses on globally-designed one-of-a-kind products made from vintage and repurposed materials. Trust me your mother will love this handmade Cactus silk patchwork kimono made by hand in their atelier in Marrakech. Each kimono's front collar is trimmed with handwoven fabric, cactus silk fabric, or West African mud cloth. It is an original design that will go with everything you have in your wardrobe whilst being sustainable as all the fabrics are repurposed materials. She will be the envy of her friends and you might find yourself asking to borrow it yourself. Think of this gift as the much elevated version of the robe mom usually got for Mother’s Day when you were younger (that was dad’s idea of a gift for sure).

One of the problems you have with perfumes and fragrances is that it is quite common that others can easily share your fragrance (remember the 80’s when everyone and their mother was wearing “Obsession”?). When you seek out small independent perfume brands you drastically decrease this possibility and having a fragrance that is practically your own. That is why we love Widian perfumes. We picked “Granada” by Widian as it is the closest you can come to being in Granada without buying your mother a plane ticket (not that we are discouraging that). The copy alone for the fragrance had us running to try it out: “Resting beneath the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, with multiple World Heritage Sites dating back over a millennia, Granada sits at the crossroads of nature and history. A tribute to this rich legacy in all of its contrasts, the newest fragrance from Widian is a symphony of fiery passion and tranquil breezes, an exquisitely constructed parfum that combines exotic spices, lush florals, and a rich amber base to create an unforgettable, wholly unique experience. Delicately calibrated between he softness of rose and the freshness of juniper, the opening harmoniously blends with the intense heat of black pepper and cinnamon supporting a robust cedarwood heart. The luxurious scent is deepened with rich undertones of amber, musk, vetiver, and patchouli, creating a captivatingly perfect balance that sets you on an historic olfactory journey.” It actually makes for a great unisex fragrance so dad may be seeking a few dabs too!

In our last blog we mentioned visiting 2 Note in Kinderhook, NY and how we fell in love with their fragrance boutique. If you don’t feel confident enough to buy your mother perfume for Mother's Day this candle in the universally loved scent of “Opus 1”Lavender Black Pepper Sandalwood is a no brainer. There is also a “Opus 2” Balsam Fir Frankincense in case you want a woodsier slightly more masculine fragrance. The packaging makes it possible to travel with the 10 oz candle that is made with 100% pure beeswax. The candle is made locally with pure botanical essences, hand poured in small batches. It’s a gift she is not only sure to love, but to actually use.

Our last gift recommendation is the very affordable Mother’s Day Gift suggestion is a book by author Chris Power entitled “Mothers” (how appropriate). Available at one of our favorite independent book stores, McNally Jackson, the synopsis reads as: “A woman uses her mother’s old travel guide, aged years beyond relevance, to navigate on a journey to nowhere; a stand-up comic with writer’s block performs a fateful gig at a cocaine-fueled bachelor party; on holiday in Greece, a father must confront the limits to which he can keep his daughters safe. Braided throughout is the story of Eva, a daughter, wife, and mother, whose search for a self and place of belonging tracks a devastating path through generations.

Ranging from remote English moors to an ancient Swedish burial ground to a hedonistic Mexican wedding, the stories in Mothers lay bare the emotional and psychic damage of life, love, and abandonment. Suffused with yearning, Power’s transcendent prose expresses a profound ache for vanished pasts and uncertain futures.” If your mother is an avid reader and perhaps can’t travel so easily these day, Mothers is a gift that will let her travel in her mind.

While flowers, chocolates and greeting cards will also make her happy, we hope these recommendations show your mother that gift giving is an art form and one that leaves the recipient with feelings of gratitude for being fondly thought of. Let that be, there is no greater gift to mom than your actual presence, that is the best present of all. Happy Mother’s Day to the women who do the hardest job on earth where you never get a day off!

KINDERHOOK, NY AN UPSTATE BUDDING ARTISAN HAVEN

The title says an upstate budding artisan haven. Fact is Kinderhook, was discovered by Henry Hudson in 1609 as he sailed far up the Hudson River on an exploratory trip. There are a few theories on how Kinderhook got it’s name one being is that Henry Hudson saw many Native Americans of the Mohican tribe playing on the bluffs, thus Kinderhook, meaning “children’s corner” in Dutch was given to this small town. Kinderhook was an important stage coach stop on the way to Albany and the town’s European Colonial heritage was steeped in artisan traditions from its founding. Not to disregard the artisan skills of the Mohicans who originally settled the area.

Surrounded by the townships of Chatham and Ghent, Kinderhook is probably known best by its most popular historical resident, the late President Martin Van Buren who was born in Kinderhook and retired there after his public life at his historical home, Linderwald which is a National Historic Site today. This charming small town is having a revival of artisanal boutiques, renovated inns and an explosion of the arts and culture.

In the center of Kinderhook is a bronze statue of its most well known resident, Martin Van Burn. He seems really little.

One of the highlights of Kinderhook is the renovated boutique hotel Old Dutch Inn which is situated in the heart of the village of Kinderhook on 8 Broad Street. Build in 1820, Old Dutch Inn was originally a shoe shop, private dwelling and a public hall. With time the building became an inn under the names of Kinderhook Inn, Lindenwald Hotel, Petrillo's Inn, Van Buren Inn and most notably and recently, Old Dutch Inn. Each guest room is named for an element of the building's or surrounding area's history. About 20 years ago a family lovingly restored the inn which includes 9 rooms that have an eclectic mixture of American Colonial and contemporary decor.

The Old Dutch Inn is in the heart of Kinderhook village surrounded by equally charming buildings which include The Kinderhook Bookstore.

Right across the Old Dutch Inn is a bagel and sandwich shop that would be at home on any street in Brooklyn, New York, Broad Street Bagel, Co. The building had a renovation in 2012 bringing all the original character back and with that a 150 year old bagel recipe. Broad Street Bagel Co. sells a wide variety of kettle boiled bagels, hot and cold beverages all in an Old World charm.

A is for Artisan, as in artisanal bagels from Broad Street Bagel Co.

Right around the corner from Broad Street Bagel Co., we have the Kinderhook Knitting Mill, which consists of a group of buildings that was originally an old knitting mill first build in the 1870’s. It was the idea of restaurateur Yen Ngo and artist Darren Waterston to bring art and food to Kinderhook during the pandemic and their mission is, “The businesses housed in the Knitting Mill, almost entirely owned and operated by women and people of color, run the gamut from an Indonesian-inspired restaurant to an art gallery to a curated general store. The ethos of The Mill is one of cooperation and collaboration that is evident in the connective thread that ties everyone together in the shared goal of cultivating a thriving village center to nourish the community.” The businesses include OK Pantry which is a concept general store with a dash of bodega and built to encourage a place to come and sit and get to know your neighborhood whilst kiddos and your pets are welcomed too. Right next door is Morning Bird Cafe serving a variety of pastries, along with made-to-order breakfast and lunch. Morning Bird Cafe is an extension of the highly acclaimed restaurant, The Aviary and bar The Nest, both located on 8 Hudson Street in Kinderhook Knitting Mill. Right next door is Village Yoga and Blake Realtors just in case you are looking for a home in the surrounding area.

This charming block included OK Pantry, Morning Bird Cafe, Village Yoga and Blake Realtors.

Yoga and pastries! A winning combination.

Around the corner of Blake Realtors, the Kinderhook Knitting Mill continues with a pop up of the Shaker Museum which was an important community in Kinderhook and influenced furniture making in America since its conception. Female owned Damsel Garden is a gardening shop which is committed to regenerative agriculture and the strong community it helps build.

The Kinderhook Knitting Mill buildings around the corner from Blake Realtor.

Walk a few steps down and you will encounter Still Life, a beautifully curated selection of art, objects and vintage clothing that feel like a hidden jewel box of items at quite reasonable prices.

Next door to Stilllife is 2 Note a perfume and beauty brand created by perfumers who are also musicians. This highly ethical made in America brand has created an entire collection inspired by the creation of music (my favorite fragrance was Adagio). This perfume boutique is a delight to walk through with vintage musical instruments sprinkled along the minimal decor that also offers bath and body, skincare and home fragrances.

The last shop you will find is at Kinderhook Knitting Mill is The Kinderhook Bottle Shop which has been awarded the best wine shop in 2022 and 2023 covering multiple counties in upstate New York by the Rural Intelligence Awards. They are, “A thoughtful, fun and highly curated wine shop in the heart of historic Kinderhook, NY, led by a NYC Sommelier (who tastes every bottle) raised in the Hudson Valley.” and we agree as we were delightedly surprised by the selection of small independent wine and spirit brands that represented both local and international vineyards and distilleries. The shop encourages you to not only learn about wines but to hang out by their beautiful fireplace and get to know your neighbor (wine always helps!!). The ethos of the shop is “A focus on naturally made wines from artisanal producers and a selection of craft spirits and ciders with special attention to local and NY state as well as female and minority producers.” And the best part was how affordable their selection was. My traveling companions were happy to find a delicious and affordable kosher wine for Passover.

The cheerful entrance to The Kinderhook Bottle Shop.

One of the best things that have happened to Kinderhook in the recent years is the explosion of art and culture, with new art galleries and art exhibition spaces popping up. Two of notable mention are The School: Jack Shaiman Gallery and Bill Arning Exhibitions. Jack Shaiman is a renowned gallerist from New York City who has exhibited famed artists for decades. Bill Arning is a curator and former director of White Columns, an exhibition space for emerging artists in New York City. Both men have taken advantage of repurposing large spaces for artist exhibitions and cultural events in Kinderhook. Their presence alone makes Kinderhook a very happening town when it comes to the forefront of contemporary art in the Hudson Valley.

Jack Shainman has repurpose an old school into The School for large scale art exhibitions and a place for his artists to create their work.

Bill Arning Exhibitions will exhibit art shows curated by famed curator Bill Arning.

A fun little map of Kinderhook and just a few of the places and activities to enjoy while visiting.

Besides having a beautiful visit to Kinderhook and the stunning Hudson Valley there are so many more places to visit, eat and see art in Kinderhook. We found this fun map pictured above which includes the Kinderhook Farmers Market. Kinderhook is a two and a half hour drive from New York City and a twenty minute drive from Hudson, NY where the Amtrak train goes to from NYC. A bus also takes you from NYC to Kinderhook (3 1/2 ride). There are many towns near Kinderhook that are also teaming with artisans, good food and art including Hudson, Chatham, Old Chatham, Redhook, Kingston and Ghent. With increasing rents in New York City many creatives are taking advantage of having a quality of life not afforded in New York and have reignited the local artisans of New York.

ARTISANAL SHOPPING IN SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, MEXICO

The Local Artisan Guide had the pleasure to travel to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico late February and the beautiful Mexican town did not disappoint on any level!

San Miguel de Allende is a colonial-era town in Mexico founded in 1541 by 16th century friar, Juan de San Miguel and Ignacio Allende, a martyr for Mexican independence. San Miguel de Allende is located in the far eastern part of the state of Guanajuato and is about a three hour drive north of Mexico City. San Miguel de Allende has been chosen continuously as one of the most beautiful towns in the world as it is home to baroque architecture, stone lined streets, top notch boutique hotels, world class Mexican and international cuisines and multiple shops and markets that display and sell the artisanal crafts, foods and spirits from all over Mexico.

A view down Calle Aldama of the Parroquia De San Miguel Arcangel.

The Local Artisan Guide was here both for business and pleasure staying in a charming villa owned by one of the many American ex-pats who now make San Miguel their home. We stayed about a five minute walk from the Rosewood Hotel, which is one of the most prestigious and beautiful hotels in San Miguel de Allende. From the Rosewood Hotel is about a eight minute walk into the center of the town and its magnificent churches, plazas and manicured parks.

Sunset on my balcony on Calle Grillo.

A night view of San Miguel de Allende from the rooftop of the Rosewood Hotel.

After a few days of walking around you learn to get around town by using the churches as your landmarks. The villas and dwellings all have impressive and unique handmade doors that lead to magical homes with courtyards and gardens decorated with the crafts of the artisans who all throughout the towns of Mexico. The Catholic Church sought out to organize the towns and villages throughout Mexico to specialize in their own craft and skills, that way they would not be competitive with each other. From textiles, to ceramics, pottery and furniture, San Miguel de Allende is a haven for the aesthetic eye. Every corner is an Instragramer’s dream, a place where artists come to paint. As a matter of fact San Miguel de Allende has long attracted artists from all over the world, thanks to the Instituto Allende, a renowned art school where many of their students including many expats chose not to return home as San Miguel de Allende is first and foremost a community known for its art, beauty and charm.

The magnificent doors of the Museo Casa del Mayorazgo de al Canal.

The streets and homes of San Miguel de Allende are an artist’s dream.

I started first walking around February 13th and thought all the hearts I saw around town were in occasion of Valentine’s Day. However I found out the sacred heart was declared to be the symbol of San Miguel de Allende as San Miguel de Allende is considered to be the heart of Mexico. So if you are looking for a romantic place to be for Valentine’s Day you can’t go wrong with this city of hearts.

Hearts are everywhere in San Miguel de Allende.

Most of the roads are made with stones, so flat comfortable walking shoes are imperative. The workmanship to make this beautiful town centuries ago does not go unnoticed as the indigenous Mexicans were the main builders of all the churches, buildings and roads through hard physical labor and craftsmanship.

The stones of Calle Aldama are typical of the streets of San Miguel de Allende.

Although San Miguel is mostly affordable for Americans (thus why many retire there) it is an expensive city for Mexico. I found it pricey until I found the more affordable food markets and artisan mercados. Since it is such a destination for expats, wealthy Mexicans and tourists many shops thrive in San Miguel de Allende. It is also home to many galleries as the overhead to run a gallery is far less than in other art cities around the world.

A colorful selection of produce at the Mercado Ignacio Ramirez.

Shopping at the Mercado Ignacio Ramirez is a feast for all the senses.

I thoughly enjoyed myself in San Miguel de Allende as a tourist and an arts and craft lover. The town is very safe (although when traveling please exercise caution everywhere) and there wasn’t a great amount of harassment by vendors. There are some beggars in along the streets so I always have some spare local currency to give out. Most of the town is gainfully employed as there are so many shops, restaurants, hotels and private homes to work at so the population is a mostly friendly and respectful one. If you are following a Google Map watch out because the town suddenly becomes very hilly as half of it seems to be located on a steep incline. I didn’t need the gym during my visit at San Miguel de Allende as between walking and climbing the steep streets I met my Apple Watch’s exercise quota.

One of San Miguel de Allende’s many hills on the way to the San Miguel Mask Museum.

The entrance to the San Miguel Museum of Masks.

Visting in the winter during February makes dressing for San Miguel de Allende a little tricky as in the morning and evening it gets chilly. It can go from the high 30’s to 50’s in the morning/late evening to 70’s and 80’s with a strong Mexican sun shining on you. I had odd cool weather when I first arrived with some rare rain followed by very sunny days going into the high 70’s. So dress in layers if you are planning to visit San Miguel de Allende. I was advised to wear cashmere as its a great way to keep warm in the early part of the day and not be impossibly hot as the sun comes out.

Cashmere sweater for a slightly chilly start of the day.

My meals were exceptional in San Miguel de Allende with many Mexican dishes I had not heard of that were rich in moles and tortillas (the town smells like fresh tortillas which is lovely), however I have to say my favorite meals were from the housekeepers of the American homeowners that I visited in San Miguel de Allende. One can get very spoiled living in San Miguel de Allende.

Rustica is a local favorite especially for breakfast in San Miguel de Allende.

San Miguel De Allende I will be back! Actually I will be back next year as I was invited to speak at a seminar next year at the El Instituto Allende on a talk on artisans and the lost arts which I will let you know when I have dates.

I hope you enjoyed my photo album of San Miguel de Allende. I had such a lovely time I took over 800 pictures so doing this edit wasn’t easy. I will have this week a video on our YouTube channel on an artisan walk through town. I do encourage you to visit if you appreciate artisan craftsmanship, beautiful architecture, good food, mezcal, amazing weather and friendly people.

BLACK OWNED BUSINESSES OF NYC 2024

February is Black History Month however at The Local Artisan Guide we feel when you pick the best artisanal objects whether it be fashion, decor, food or accessories, you find the makers are all inclusive and represented whether it be female, persons of color or sexual identity. So black owned businesses have always been represented on this site. That said Black makers still need support and to be highlighted so we will make sure minority and female owned businesses will have a spotlight on them especially when they are being celebrated nation wide.

The Local Artisan Guide chose five Black Owned businesses in New York City that are local, artisanal and represent fashion, decor, food and accessories. Black owned businesses are nothing new in New York City. For over a century Harlem which is located in the northern region of Manhattan has see black owned businesses flourish and thrive for decades. Iconic stores, clubs and restaurants are still around and have spread to all areas of the city. Please view our selections below and click onto the captions to view their sites and information.

HARLEM CANDLE CO.

Harlem Candle Co. was established in 2014 by lifestyle expert Teri Johnson as an homage to the spirit of Harlem, fragrance and jazz. Harlem Candle Co. offers more than candles, as they have developed perfume, home fragrances, gifts and journals. The products are named after famed Harlem residents and iconic spots in the neighborhood. One of our favorite candles is named after famed Harlem poet Langston Hughes. The candle’s fragrance and notes are inspired by elements of the poet’s life. Their description of the scent is “The worn vintage leather of his favorite armchair, aromatic tobacco laced with a hint of clove and vanilla from the pipes of the neighborhood men, and the smell of ambery incense that recalls his many visits to churches in Mexico.” The candle is packaged in a beautiful cobalt blue and is 11 oz with a burn time of 80 hours.

CLOUDY DONUTS

The neighborhood of Nolita, NYC is all atwitter as black owned vegan small batch donut brand Cloudy Donut has opened up a shop on the quiet block of Mott Street. We passed it on our Nolita Walk for our YouTube channel and had to go back to visit. Founded by Zewiditu Ruffin and Derrick Faulcon in 2020, Cloudy Donuts also has a store in Baltimore, MD and Brooklyn Heights (first black owned business in Brooklyn Heights!!). Although the donuts are a little bit more pricier than other donuts, there is a reason why; the flavors are EXTENSIVE! There are donut flavors here you would never think are possible. We had such a hard time picking a flavor because we wanted to try them all! So we will just have to keep on going back to try their whole selection. The Banana Fosters flavor was out of this world and a great way to have the hard to make dessert. Welcome to Nolita!!

BIER WAX

Established in 2017 by Chris Maestro, BierWax is a black owned craft beer bar. With over 5,000 vinyl records and a finely curated tap-list, they provide the ideal venue for music and beer aficionados. As they say on their site, “BierWax is malted grains, water, yeast, and hops mixed with a pinch of 45s, a cup of boom-bap, and a heaping tablespoon of funk.” We tried their “German Chocolate Cake Stout” which we didn’t even think could be a flavor but now is a reason to travel to Prospect Heights. BierWax’s selection and music make for an experience not just a night out at a bar.

YU INTERIORS

Yu Interiors is a black owned home decor store founded in 1999 by Ludlow Beckett who tired of his life in the finance world figured he could open up a store in the burgeoning area of Fort Greene, a neighborhood that at the time were growing in black owned businesses. Instead of going to Manhattan to find home decor, Beckett decided he could offer his neighbors a highly selection of curated home decor. From candles to furniture, Yu Interiors has become a go to destination for home decor in Brooklyn.

BYAS & LEON

Byas & Leon are a black owned sustainable fashion brand. Their mission is to “specializes in ethically sourced apparel—including curated vintage, fair-trade brands and handmade wares from independent craftspeople. It also serves as an incubator of various community-driven initiatives and an Afro diaspora-centric cultural hub, providing space for artists, creatives and entrepreneurs to exchange ideas and host programming.” From candles to accessories to apparel for men and women, we love the unisex BLCU Sweater. This sweater in homage to the spirit of learning that's very much an integral part of their communal fabric, as well as to the Black collegiate institutions that are very much integral to Black History. Byas & Leon even has a mobile airstream that goes around neighborhoods introducing the brand to a greater audience.

These brands are just a few of many black owned businesses in New York City, much less the United States. We support not only that they are black owned businesses but that they also share our ethos for local, encourage others to shop small, are artisanal, sustainable, ethical and rely on a passion for craft.

It comes in a array of colors but we chose this pretty Bandana style pattern that will stand out for the right reasons in any crowd.

KEMPTON & CO. , METALLIC CAMO LARGE CANVAS CROSSBODY

Kempton & Co. is a handbag and accessory brand founded by Fiona Kempton, an English designer who is based in New York City. As a designer and world traveler, Kempton started designing handbags that are not only convenient and stylish but held all your devices safely. Patent of Heart works to keep centuries old skills passed down generation by generation in their product all the while giving back their proceeds to help girls achieve their educational goals. It’s a win/win holiday gift to give! We love the Grace Phone Bag as it has enough room to just carry your bare essentials (cell phone, credit cards, etc.) in a small cross body. It also comes in beautiful bold colors that stand out as a lovely accessory.

POLENE, Numéro Dix

Polène is a relatively new handbag brand, founded in Paris in 2016 by three siblings who had a vision of creating elegant handbags in a multitude of silhouettes, many in petite sizes. Using the best leathers from Italian and Spanish tanneries, all production is entrusted to the craftsmen of Ubrique, a Spanish town specialized in luxury leather goods. One of our favorite bags is “Numéro Dix”. With its rounded shape, foam padding, and hand-stitching, the “Numéro Dix” is a nod to the equestrian codes of saddlery. Its half-moon design highlights juxtaposing curves. It’s a handbag sure to be cherished and treasured for its workmanship and beauty.

MOI&ASS, BUBBLE BAG

One of our favorite new handbag brands is MOI&ASS, a Madrid based brand created by Moira Laporta, and Alessandra de Osma. MOI&ASS focus on delivering long lasting investment pieces, briging minimalism with functionality. Inspired by exceptional materials, the brand is marked by traditional craftsmanship, and its timeless designs made from sustainable leather. We love the signature Bubble Bag. Made of timeless calfskin leather with a cotton canvas interior, tastefully enhanced by its handcrafted handles and leather loops. Its flexible side panels feature leather cords that can be tightened or loosened to customize the bag's shape. Boasting multiple uses, this compact bag can be carried as a shoulder bag, crossbody, or top handle.

CLARE V, MAMAN JE T'AIME

Another brand created from feeling an absence of stylish bags for your computer and devices, French journalist turned handbag designer Clare V. decided to create a handbag brand that makes stylish handbags for your devices but with the stylish French twist. We love the quirkiness of the brand plus their fun sense of humor and color. One of our favorite bags is the MAMAN JE T'AIME, translation: I love you Mom, this is a canvas bag made in collaboration Every Mother Counts. 30% of the purchase price will be donated to Every Mother Counts so you get a fun beautiful canvas tote and give back to a worthy cause.

AMPERSAND AS APOSTROPHE, MICRO-TOTE / NEON PINK PYTHON

AMPERSAND AS APOSTROPHE was founded by Detroit native and now New York City-based designer, Jessica Park, a former architect whose preferred method of solving design challenges is to refine what's there instead of focusing on what's not. One of their best sellers which we recommend is their Micro Tote. The style is the mini key for a hands-free, sophisticated fun bag with pops of color to jump start your wardrobe yet it fits your keys, wallet, cell, etc. It’s fashionable yet fully functional.

BAGGU, CAMERA CROSSBODY

BAGGU, CAMERA CROSSBODY, $48

BAGGU is an eco-friendly bag and accessory brand known for colorful patterns, brings their playful energy onto their social media channels. This fun yet affordable brand has a fun unisex camera bag that we just love (although it can be more than a camera bag). It comes in a multitude of colors and a silhouette that is sporty and made from a slightly structured recycled heavyweight nylon, recycled ripstop nylon lining with an adjustable strap. Also machine washable so great for kids too!

BAG-ALL, MEN'S SUIT GARMENT BAG WITH POCKET, CREAM

Bag-all is a New York City based brand founded by Swedish stylist Jennifer Wesslau who embarked on a mission to make a positive impact on the environment. Fueled by an unwavering passion for design, sustainability, and entrepreneurship, she aimed to raise awareness about the vital concept of reuse, marrying enduring quality with timeless aesthetics. A perfect gift for the man in your life is the Men's Suits garment bag! Protect your suit from dust or other closet debris with their cotton Garment bag which will keep your suit clean while letting it breathe, which is good for both cotton and wool fabrics. The bag is closed with a durable metal zipper and comes with a zipper pocket in the back to store ties, accessories, and other items. It has a fun, sleek print, making it both stylish and functional. The perfect gift any groom or man for any occasion. You can also personalize your garment bag by adding a monogram of your name or initials! They will LOVE this gift!

PARAVEL, CABANA SEE-ALL SET

Paravel is one of our most recent favorite travel brand we have come upon for its beautiful, colorful and elegant designs. However you could have knocked us over with a feather when we learned how sustainable and eco friendly the brand is. They use post-consumer plastic water bottles by recycling them into longer-lasting products–like their Negative Nylon® and Ecocraft Canvas® styles. An excellent and creative way to reduce plastic pollution. Paravel uses upcycled and recycled materials in 100% of their products. Not many brands can say that. WE picked from their collection of travel bags the Cabana See-All Set. Their signature-striped Cabana Vanity Case Set is spacious enough to pack all your toiletries, lightweight enough to never weigh you down, and strong enough to take on any in-transit messes (it can easily be wiped down). Stow it in your carry-on, set it out in your hotel room, or use it as your vanity case right at home. Individually sized to hold it all and see it all. It comes with a mini version to make traveling even easier or for shorter trips. We love the transparent aspect of the design so you can actually see what you have and don’t have in your set (Yikes! Where is the deodorant??). We expect to hear more from this brand in the future and know when you give it as a gift (even to yourself) the bearer of the gift will be just as impressed with the sustainability of the brand as we are.

So that is our holiday gift suggestions for bags. We have bags for all and behind every brand here is supporting local, small independent brands that use artisan skills and eco friendly practices that give back to the earth.

Happy Holidays!

Inphorm NYC has lately added men’s and girls and boys activewear to their brand and we are spotlighting the Girls Strappy Tennis Flounce Dress which we feel young ladies will not only adore but likely will want to play tennis more! Sophisticated and playful is how we would describe this dress. We recommend pairing this with their classic compression short as an underpinning. Desideri Design, Fukui Organic Silver Ring

The first fisherman's sweaters made from a soft blend of recycled oyster shells, recycled water bottles, and cotton. Inspired by vintage style and classic comfort, these garments boast ribbed cuffs and collars to promote thermal regulation and lightweight layers for windy days among the great outdoors. Donning his famous ensign, our Bellamy SeaWell™ Sweater provides the perfect versatile layer for year-round use.

McNally Jackson, Slim Aarons, “Style”

Independent book store McNally Jackson has an amazing collection of books and to support independent book stores in an Amazon age helps make sure they survive. That said we want to recommend a classic book on style, Slim Aarons, “Style”, a book on glamorous fashions, personalities, and places captured by iconic photographer Slim Aarons in this collection from curator Shawn Waldron and author Kate Betts. McNally Jackson’s description on the book is as follows: “Slim Aarons, at least according to the man himself, did not photograph fashion: “I didn’t do fashion. I did the people in their clothes that became the fashion.” But despite what he claimed, Aarons’s work is indelibly tied to fashion. Aarons’s incredibly influential photographs of high society and socialites being unambiguously themselves are still a source of inspiration for modern day style icons. Slim Aarons: Style showcases the photographs that both recorded and influenced the luminaries of the fashion world. This volume features early black-and-white fashion photography, as well as portraits of the fashionable elite—like Jacqueline de Ribes, C.Z. Guest, Nan Kempner, and Marisa Berenson—and those that designed the clothes, such as Oscar de la Renta, Emilio Pucci, Mary McFadden, and Lilly Pulitzer. Featuring some never-before-seen images and detailed captions written by fashion historians, Slim Aarons: Style is a collection of the photographer’s most stylish work.”

AYU New York, Handmade Stuffed Toys from Oaxaca, Mexico

AYU New York is known for home decor from around the world and in the store we found these adorable and beautiful handmade stuffed toys from Oaxaca, Mexico. These are perfect gifts for a child that has parents that are style and eco friendly conscious as the child gets a fun and colorful toy to play with and the parents have a toy that actually adds to the style of their home decor. No plastic, messy and loud toys here. Made out of cotton, price upon request.

So there you go, ten gift ideas for the holidays that will satisfy everyone on your gift giving list. They are artisanal, eco friendly and help small local brands thrive. Plus your loved ones will appreciate how you went the extra mile to find a gift as unique as they are.

LAST MINUTE FATHER'S DAY GIFT IDEAS

It’s just not fair. We all know when Mother’s Day is. We prep and plan for Mother’s Day. However it always seems that Father’s Day just happens to sneak up on you when you suddenly realize that you have to rush to find a last minute gift for dear old dad. That doesn’t mean you can’t find a meaningful, unique and thoughtful gift for dad. We here at The Local Artisan Guide are happy to help you with last minute Father’s Day gifts that can easily inspire you and best you can find them near you or online. Dad will never know these special gifts were last minute especially as they are so artisanal.

Have dad look like a cool zaddy and protect him from the sun with a Balibuntal straw fedora, made by your local millinery. Here we have the Nomad from The Hat Shop (in NYC) which is the perfect gift for the dad that likes to travel. This hat is water friendly so it’s perfect for the beach, pool and boating. 4” fedora crown with 2 1/2” brim.

If your dad is a sports fanatic, chances are he considers Jackie Robinson one of his heroes. Not only was Jackie Robinson the ultimate sportsman, he was an exceptional man who broke many barriers for African Americans. There is a museum in Soho, NYC dedicated to Jackie Robinson and we thought this Jackie Robinson baseball jersey with Jackie’s retired number, “42” for the Brooklyn Dodgers would make any dad excited to wear.

Any one can give their dad a “World Best Dad” mug but we think your dad would be more amused with the “Sumo Speckled Mug”. Imagine the smile dad will have every morning with his coffee when he looks at five sumo wrestlers each flexing their personalities. Absolutely adorable.

Is your dad happily retired? Here is the perfect gift for the dad who has worked long and hard for his family and loves to take advantage of the beach and picnics with an “Out of Office” tote from Kempton and Co. Their Out of Office Oversized Tote has been lovingly hand painted in coral red and azur blue, with the words OUT OF OFFICE on the front and a large star on the reverse.  However the back is the front or the front the back!  Think wearable art! The bridle leather handles are adjustable and the bag includes interior pockets for your cell phone, pen and water bottle. It also includes a clip for your keys so you don't have to dig for them. This bag is great for beach and city life. Dimensions 14" H x 12" L x 11" D, 7" Handle Drop adjusts  by 3".

Let’s keep dad dapper and fashionable on special occasions with one of Brackish unique and lovely bowties. We especially love the Edisto. Edisto is a black and blue bow tie crafted with navy, forest green, black, and white pheasant feathers, and grey and white guinea feathers. Center wrap is black grosgrain. Each bow tie is hand-crafted in Charleston, South Carolina and takes approximately five hours to make, start to finish. Bow tie dimensions are 2.5” tall and 4.5” wide. Each feather used in production is all-natural and sustainably sourced. We guarantee your dad will love the attention he will garner with this unique accessory.

If your dad is very traditional, you can still get him a great gift that is also very fashionable. We recommend a boat show from the small brand Inkerman, especially the Yacht Moc, An elevated, yet relaxed, moccasin style adding a contemporary feel to the classic boat shoe design. The Yacht Moc, a close relative to the Boat shoe, retains all the characteristics of an Inkerman boat shoe : an easy-going elegance, with versatility and comfort at the forefront of design. Part of our new Made in Portugal collection focussing on sustainability, premium leathers and hand finishing.

  • Full-grain, Grade A leather sourced from Italy

  • Eco-friendly Vegetable Tanned Hide

  • Natural Rubber Sole

  • Handmade in Portugal

And because we like to recommend gifts for all price ranges, we have the intellectual dad who loves to read. You can support your local independent book store by buying your dad a book on a subject that he loves (or a gift certificate so he can pick his own book). McNally Jackson is a popular independent book store with a great selection of books any dad would love. We are highlighting Henry Grabar’s deep dive on parking lots, “Paved Paradise”.

We hope our selection of Father’s Day Gift ideas will inspire you especially if you are looking for a gift last minute. Last minute gifting doesn’t necessarily mean bad or thoughtless gifting, you just need to know where to look and shopping local and small business is a win/win. So honor the father or father figure in your life this Sunday. Happy Father’s Day!

Affordable Mother's Day Gifts for Mom

Can you believe it’s already May? That means Mother’s Day is just around the corner and The Local Artisan Guide once again saves the day by highlighting gifts for mom that are affordable, unique, thoughtful and artisanal. These gifts are made by small, local businesses and your mother will appreciate that you took the time to show her with these gifts how special she is to you. Click on the captions for the links for the items.

Just because mom wants to wear sensible shoes doesn’t mean they can’t be stylish AND comfortable. We love the CHIKO Kaeleigh Round Toe Block Heels Slingback Shoes. The Kaeleigh has a sensible heal and features a leather, suede upper, leather lining, rubber sole. Heel height is approx. 0.5″. We love the green suede and tan trim and know your mom would be delightly surprised by this gift.

Dana Blair is a jewelry designer who after 20 years and a bicoastal life has settled into New York City with her first brick and mortal jewelry boutique in Chelsea, New York (also available online). Dana specializes in beautiful, delicate jewelry that is affordable which lets you layer up with an array of semi-precious stones. Dana’s necklaces, rings, bracelets are great gifts for mom, we especially love her dream catcher’s necklaces which she is most known for and is now on her bracelets. Most of the pieces are under one hundred dollars.

A beautiful journal from your local book or gift store is a thoughtful gift for your mother that she will enjoy as chances are she is more a paper than tech kind of mom. Here at Good for the Study in Nolita, NYC we find a large selection of beautiful journals for mom’s thoughts and ideas.

If your mother loves to cook here is an original gift that she will love for her kitchen and its the Bitterman Salt Co. Pink Himalayan Salt Block & Cookbook (comes with its own saltblock). It’s the ultimate guide to cooking on salt and the awesome power of salt. This cookbook will teach mom to grill, bake and serve on the saltblock. She’ll be appreciative (and so will you) to learn the new skill of saltblock cooking.

One way to make mom feel special on Mother’s Day is to get her a customized gift and we love the Green Velvet Laptop Case with chain and charger pocket. It’s 15” across and comes with her name on it (order on the website to customize). It’s very affordable at just $60 and BAG ALL is a women own business that has focused on sustainability since its concept. Mom will appreciate that you are helping planet earth and giving her a customize gift for Mother’s Day.

One can’t go wrong with a artisanal scented candle for mom. We recently discovered the candles from The Commonfolk Collective that have special “Mum” candles (pictured are the Astrology Candles). This candle is a LIMITED EDITION with only 100 units available. They have tweaked their original Mum label with a NEW peachy coloured background featuring gold foil text to tie in together with our 'Love Ya Mum' Soul Candle + our second LIMITED EDITION candle, Dictionary Meaning Family.

And for our grand finale we have one of our most favored finds, “Marrakech” from The Bubble Collection. Artisanal perfumers Michael Perris and Gregory Cole have worked with world renowned brands before deciding to create their own memorable perfume collection and decided to name it The Bubble. We were immediately captivated by “Marrakesh”. A floral and spicy scent that is described as “Take a stroll through the souk, filled with dazzling aromas of sunny citrus, scintillating spices, sumptuous florals and supple woods. In the shade of a flying carpet, you find yourself entranced by the complex rhythmic patterns of hand-dyed wool, the elegant arabesques on silver platters, and gilded tea glasses in rainbow hues. Tendrils of steam from your tea mingle with swirls of sweet tobacco.” We guarantee any mom would fall in love with the fragrance, its the next best thing to going to Marrakesh.

These are our picks for Mother’s Day. They are affordable, thoughtful, artisanal and will show your mother that even though they are very affordable they are unique and special, just like she is.

LAST MINUTE ARTISANAL VALENTINES DAY GIFTS THAT ARE SURE TO PLEASE!

February is one of those months that come and go in a New York minute. Before you know it, you blink and its over. Valentines Day is in the middle of February and it’s easy to remember last minute to make that dinner reservation and find a thoughtful gift that will let your loved one know you know what makes them feel like they are important in your life. We even have a gift for that person in your life that you are over with and needed a subtle and stylish way to say “Please Don’t Be My Valentine”.

Here at The Local Artisan Guide we have a Valentines Day Gift Guide that ranges from the very affordable to a little outlandish. However all the gifts are quite unique and truly artisanal. Just click on the link for more info.

Teddy Bear Duo. 2 of the cutest teddy bear madeleines covered with 2 chocolates, 2 different flavors

Components : Milk chocolate madeleine with chocolate-hazelnut spread, Dulcey chocolate madeleine with maple

Allergy : Dairy, Gluten, Nut (Hazelnut), Egg

VIVAS: A REFLECTION ON THE FEMALE BODY:
The project started as a way to desexualise the view on the female body and understand we are beautiful in all our different shapes, sizes and colors. My way of doing this is through my ceramic pieces! It all started about 2 years ago when I made a pot and then added boobs, and I loved it so much that I never stopped! At first, I tried to replicate exactly what I had made, but I couldn’t. I quickly realised that no piece would ever look like the other and hence the essence of the project, each piece is unique and unrepeatable. My name is Carla, I am a ceramist and an architect. I hand-make each of the pieces with my team at Vivas Ceramica in my studio in Buenos Aires. Each collection seeks to empower women through a carefully thought out theme.

Pointy Pen Cards

Artist Michael Mendoza will personally make for you a witty, funny and beautiful Valentines Day Card for your loved one. You can reach him at point_pen_cards on Instagram or at El Mercado in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY. A very affordable way to show someone you care.

LA ENVIRO is a vegan wallet, watch and accessories label, based in Perth Australia. They envision a world that is animal cruelty-free, whilst creating stunning and lasting designs using sustainable materials, such as recycled plastic bottles and premium vegan leathers. They endeavor to maintain the balance in nature as they create fashion with minimal damage and depletion to nature in the process.

Award winning jewelry maker Val Stern is showing his new collection at Atelier D’Emotion starting February 11th, 2023. Val has trained with third generation Faberge artisans and his jewelry is not only elaborate but very technical just like Faberge eggs are technical with hidden compartments and the ability to move and transform. Come to this amazing boutique or go to their website to check out Val’s amazing collection of one of a kind pieces. If you want to stun someone for Valentines Day, this is the gift for them.

Scent notes of Cardamom, Mimosa, Vanilla Milk and Sandalwood, this unisex fragrance is featured by Phlur’s whose philosophy is to use both natural and synthetic ingredients.

Phlur loves botanical ingredients for the character they lend to our fragrances, however natural doesn’t always equal safer. In some cases, synthetic ingredients can be less allergenic than certain natural ingredients.

Harvesting natural ingredients for fine fragrance can require tons of botanicals for a very small amount of material. Many natural ingredients are at risk of becoming over harvested and endangered. Phlur partner with the world’s leading fragrance suppliers to ensure we are utilizing sustainable natural materials and we are being respectful of the environment.

A gift from Miss Havisham’s Curiosities is a spectacular way to show someone you care…or you don’t. There is a collection of biting phases on beautiful china with a daring message once you are done with your tea or coffee.

See, getting thoughtful Valentines Day gifts doesn’t have to be a chore. Dinner, flowers and a box of chocolate can be quite pedestrian. Shop local artisan and its a win/win situation. And if you don’t have a Valentines then give a gift to the love of your life…YOURSELF!!

Happy Valentines Day!

BRANDS TO BE THANKFUL FOR GIVING BACK

With the holiday season now officially upon us The Local Artisan Guide would like to highlight some brands that share the same ideals and mission of working with artisans in a sustainable manner and giving back to make the world a better place.

These days you can help make the world a better place by learning to be a conscious shopper. Investigating a brand’s ethos and what they stand for is a win/win situation. To know the product you are investing your money is made in an eco friendly manner that helps local community around the world is the shopping ripple that we as a society need to be apart of.  We are highlighting for this Thanksgiving five brands that have this mindset. Click onto the caption in the image for more information.

The first brand we would like to highlight is Akola, a globally inspired jewelry brand creating beautiful designs to lift up and champion women around the world. Akola means “she works” in a local Ugandan dialect. Akola provides life-changing job opportunities through vertically integrated manufacturing employing women in Uganda to make each Akola piece.

A piece we love is the Zuri Set of Bangle Bracelets. For an affordable $195 you get the option of two different color sets of bangles to chose from (blonde and black). The blonde set featured here includes; one luxury designer Austrian Crystal encrusted bangle, two 10k gold tone bangles and three horn bangles carved by hand in their Ugandan horn studio. All bangles are handcrafted in Ugandan, 2.5” inner diameter and you can wear all together or mix and match.

Are you are looking for a gift for the special man in your life whether it be your boyfriend, brother, dad or good male friend? Are you looking a spectacular gift that also gives back to the world? May we recommend the Alpaca Scarf from Global Goods Partners. This knit Nayra Alpaca Scarf is woven from the softest baby alpaca from Peru and is not only cozy warm but super lightweight. The dimensions are 72”L x 16”W and come from the artisans of Royal Knit, a group of artisans based in Peru who work in their small workshop weaving alpaca and other natural fibers into accessories. This program helps specially women who are victims of domestic  abuse in effort to promote cultural identity and generate incomes for themselves and their children. They have grown now to over 400 weavers and knitters with over 40 workshops located in Cusco, Puno, Huancavelica and Lima, Peru.

A great affordable stocking stuffer we have for the holidays comes from Patent of Heart with their new selection of novelty leather luggage tags at just $29 each (Dimensions: L: 4.25” x W: 3”). Each luggage tag come in a variety of different colors with five funny sayings we most certainly find ourselves saying when we travel with luggage. They are:

  • Thank God You Found Me comes in black, yellow red, blue and orange.

  • They All Look The Same Don’t They? Comes in black, yellow, red, blue and orange.

  • Woo Hoo I’m Over Here! Comes in black, yellow, red, blue and orange.

  • Nope Not Yours comes in blue, yellow, orange and red.

  • Nope Yours Is The Other Black Bag comes in black, yellow, red, blue and orange.

Patent of Heart was built on the belief and mission of giving back. Their brand was born out of creating a beautiful product working with artisans, mostly female, whilst preserving their traditions and skills, upcycling raw materials and having a portion of our profits go to help educate girls in Turkey.

When it comes to home decor, World Market, is a San Francisco brand that has been selling artisanal home decor from around the world since the 70’s. They focus on products that are sustainable and helps artisans keep their local artisan skills alive. We are featuring exclusively from World Market the “All Across Africa Dark Blue Woven Disc Wall Decor”. Handcrafted of raffia and banana fibers, this beautiful disc is made in Uganda and is ready to hang in your home or office. Available in additional designs, the disc is 20” in diameter x 2.5” depth. The artisans creating this piece are artisanal women weavers from Uganda and includes a tag from the weaver describing what creating this piece of art means to her. In collaboration with “All Across Africa”, these artisans are empowered to pay school fees, gain access to safe housing, food and healthcare and save for her future and family.

Our final recommendation of gifts that give back to the world is the “Mini Candle Trio Gift Box” from the Wurrumay Collective for $49.95. The Wurrumay Collective is a small handmade business created by Natasha Kaiser, a proud Aboriginal woman from the Gomeroa Tribe in NSW, Australia. These three 60 gram mini candles come in Australian Bush, Australian Sandalwood and Kakadu Plum. Inspired by her homelands and Australia’s natural resources, Wurrumay Collective helps the Gomeroa Tribe and provides work from this Australian luxury fragrance brand. The candles make for unique unisex gift items and is a great way to help a small artisan brand and its community from around the world.

We hope we inspired you to gift giving that ripples in positive ways from brands that make it part of their mission to give consciously back to communities and people around the world. The stories of these brands and how they came about to make a difference in the world using artisans makes any product whether for yourself or to your loved ones worth having. Going against algorithms for shopping and focusing on small, local brands that give back is the perfect way to acquire good shopping karma for the holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving from The Local Artisan Guide!

MISTER MARVELOUS EAU DE PARFUM, BYREDO

Your dad will love the limited edition fragrance, “Mister Marvelous” by Byredo. Mister Marvelous turns the classic men’s cologne on its head with a modern, citrus-led twist. Brimming with charisma and exuding the scent of a confident character, the sweet opening of mandarin leaves and neroli flower leads to a fresh heart of bamboo and green lavender. MEN’S STRETCHABLE SILK PAJAMA SET, LILYSILK

What a way to add a touch of luxury to your dad’s life. These stretchable, breathable silk pajamas are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Made to move with you, the Men's Striped Silk Stretch Pajama set has been created using an innovative technique that combines silk with spandex for a more comfortable fit. These pajamas are also super stylish, with a self-colored stripe running through the shirt and matching pants. Buy two pairs to wear with your significant other, who knew dressing up to stay in could feel so good. Also the silk used in Lilysilk is a more sustainable silk because the silk worms are fed with the more eco friendly Mulberry bush.

MEN’S NEGRONI SMOKING SLIPPER, SOLUDOS

It’s always five o’clock somewhere! Treat your dad to these ultra hip slippers with one of his favorite cocktails embroidered on the front toes. Soludos, a sustainable footwear brand with a marvelous sense of wit and humor make their slippers with organic cotton for the upper canvas and are working on creating a low carbon footprint for their brand. Besides comfort and style, your dad also gets to show off his part time hobby of mixologist through his footwear. Win/Win!

CORNELL WOOLRICH, “DEAD AT DAWN”, THE MYSTERIOUS BOOKSHOP

One great and affordable Father’s Day gift is the gift of reading and books. If your dad is a book worm and loves sitting down to a good read may we recommend The Mysterious Bookshop, a bookstore that specializes in mysteries. Our choice is Cornell Woolrich’s “Deadline at Dawn”. The synopsis of the books is as follows: When Quinn first meets Bricky, she’s working as a partner-for-hire at a dancehall and he’s struggling to shake the anxiety of his guilty conscience. Earlier that day, the young man took advantage of a found key and used it to rob a stranger’s home. Now, with the purloined money in his pocket, Quinn is unable to escape the memory of his wrongdoing―and not even a night spent dancing is enough to silence his nagging thoughts.

When the dancehall closes, he and Bricky―linked, after many intimate hours, by a budding romance―return to the scene of the crime intending to restore the stolen fortune and begin a new life together, only to discover, upon arrival, that the owner of the property has been murdered. There’s evidence present that easily links Quinn to the crime, and he expects that, as soon as day breaks and the authorities learn of the gruesome scene, he will be arrested straight away. Which means that he and Bricky have only a few short hours to find the true killer and clear Quinn’s name for good.

Wow! I think even mom or you may borrow this book when dad is done!

POSTMAN ECLAIR BAG, NAVY, BLEU DE CHAUFFE AT KAI D UTILITY

A stylsih and utilitarian bag for dad is always a good choice of gift for Father’s Day and we love the Postman Eclair in navy (comes in other colors too). This classic French postman bag from Bleu de Chauffe is avaialble at sustainable design brand Kai D Utility and is 100% made of organic leather. Removable leather strap and comfortable leather shoulder pad lined with natural felt. Two side pockets and one pocket in the front. 11 and 13 " padded inside laptop pocket. The Inside cotton pocket is the support of the Bleu de Chauffe label, signed and dated by the artisan. Patina handmade. 100% made in France. Size: 15" x 11" x 3.93"

CLASSIC FEDORA, THE HAT SHOP NYC

A classic fedora is a piece of slow fashion your father is sure to not only appreciate and wear but hand down as a family heirloom. We are big fans of The Hat Shop NYC where they offer a classic fedora made from Panama straw and a variety of trims to choose from. Just give them your dad’s head measurements (how you choose to get those measurements without surprising him is your dilemma) and he will receive a bespoke fedora, perfect to protect him from summer rays in stylish form. Crown: 4” fedora. Brim: 2” brim.

JEFF KOONS X IKEPOD HORIZON “CANNONBALLS” MODEL HHTJK IN TITANIUM AT ROWING BLAZERS

This gift is a bit pricey and aspirational but if you have the dash, may we recommend a vintage, limited edition watch by renowned artist Jeff Koons? Available at Rowing Blazers, this collaboration between Ikepod and Koons was inspired by Koon’s 2006-2010 exhibition piece “Cannonballs”. The work takes inspiration from the Marvel comic character, The Hulk, in molecular form. Koons described his sculpture by stating: “This stack of cannonballs is actually The Hulk. If you would take the Hulk and break him down, in a molecular-like structure, this would be the proportions. Of his greens, his violet and his black. This piece is having a dialogue with minimalism and making a reference to Sol Le Witt.”

The watch’s introduction in 2009 served to make an impact on the lives of others with the proceeds directly going towards the Koons Family Institute to help missing and exploited children. This example is being offered in new and unworn condition, with the stickers on the front and back of the case remaining in place and untouched. It also includes the original leather case and outer cardboard box. The strap design was used by Apple on the Apple Watch. Curated by Wind Vintage.

BRAVE BROTHER - URBAN MONK BALM CANDLE

If your budget for Father’s Day is not an expensive vintage watch may we suggest a candle made in the Bronx by Urban Monk Balm Candle that is masculine yet not overpowering. The scent is “Brave Brother” and it has notes of Vetiver, patchouli, cedarwood, clara sage, bergamot, Egyptian amber, cardimon and star anise. Ingredients feature natural essential oils, organic soy wax, organic cotton wicks, designed for enhanced release of essential oil fragrances. Scent brings up our memories so have your father always remember you when he lights this calming candle.

SHAVING BRUSH WITH SILVER BADGER AND BRASS HANDLE, SANTA MARIA NOVELLA

Out of all our Father’s Day gift recommendations this may be the one he actually would use the most. If your dad shaves, have him do it in style with one of the oldest grooming brands around Costella 1828 from Genoa, Italy and available at Santa Maria Novella. Costella 1828 offers a shaving brush made from the finest materials. This shaving brush is pure silver badger-hair with a brass handle. Turned from untreated brass, then painted with nanotechnology products to protect from oxidation without modifying the natural finish. Your father will be sure to treasure this unique piece of grooming equipment for years to come.

Well those are our recommendations for an artisanal, unique and thoughtful Father’s Day. Being a father (or father figure) is an important task of love and labor and if done well should be recognized and rewarded. Your presence and time with your father would perhaps be what they want the most but these gifts we feel will be a close second.

Happy Father’s Day from The Local Artisan Guide!

THE LOCAL ARTISAN GUIDE'S MOTHER'S DAY GIFT GUIDE

This year for The Local Artisan Guide we are proud to present our gift ideas that come from local, small artisans that can be found on both online stores and brick and mortar shops. With Covid we learned at The Local Artisan Guide that in order to be pandemic proof we must highlight artisans that are both online and brick and mortar. This was always our plan however Covid made us speed up the process of highlighting artisans that do not present their wares in a physical shop. The benefit for this is for everyone as you can be sure to shop from anywhere worldwide. All our gift guides and artisans we have highlighted in the past have had an online site along with their brick and mortar store but not all artisans with an online shop have had the luxury of a store. That said we have gifts in all price ranges and categories to make sure we cover all your bases. This year we have gift suggestions that we know your mother would love and appreciate on this day to honor her that are thoughtful, curated and as original as she is. Just click onto the captions to go to the store sites.

TRUDON

Trudon is the oldest and one of the most prestigious candle and fragrance makers in France, established in 1643 and with a long tradition of excellence we would ordinarily recommend one of their spectacular scented candles however we are recommending as a gift to mother their wax bust of Marie-Antoinette. This little-known copy of Marie-Antoinette of Austria which stands at 22 cm, is attributed to one of the Brachard brothers, either the eldest, Jean-Charles-Nicolas or the youngest, Jean-Nicolas-Alexandre. This object is an idealized portrait of the queen instead of the evocation of a sovereign at the height of her power. The head is slightly turned to the right; the shoulders are covered with a swath of fabric for a natural effect; she is wearing a crown decorated with a fleur-delis and a row of pearls. As one of the most famous and controversial women in French History, Marie-Antoinette was the object of many artistic representations. Many valuable pieces disappeared during the French Revolution. Fortunately, some copies have survived the upheavals of time. Say what you would say about Marie-Antoinette but one thing for sure, she loved her children.

ARIANA BOHLING

Ariana Bohling is a footwear and accessories designer that has managed to also built a following for her incredibly comfy and stylish slippers. COQUI COQUI AT AEDES

Located in Aedes, the highly curated of fragrance boutique, Flor de Mayo A powerful and sensual floral scent, Flor de Mayo combines exotic, peachy, spring Mayflower and balmy, sweet and sensual frangipani notes, complete with a twist of fresh, fragile, bewitching jasmine, adding an uplifting luminosity. Evocative frangipani is native to Mexico and the Caribbean shores, and a flower that is peppered throughout the folklores of the Yucatan and ancient Mayan medicine. Jasmine is also known by natives as huele de noche (scent of the night) for its far-travelling, seductive notes that come to life in the dusky evening breeze. Flor de Mayo is evocative of dreamy, warm, balmy nights in tropical climates and spontaneous encounters in places new. We recommend this fragrance because we are sure its like nothing your mother ever had on her skin and she will thank you for it!
