LA FUNDIDORA - PARTY SET SALSAS AND COOKING SAUCES
After all our travels this year there is no way we could not recommend a gift from one of our favorite artisan countries, Mexico! Besides it’s beautiful craftsmanship we decided to go with a much more tastier gift and that is authentic Mexican salsas and sauces from family run La Fundidora. Founded by Mexican City natives who now reside in Brooklyn, NY. they missed the authentic artisanal small batch salsas and sauces they had grown up on. Salsas in NYC were watery and tasted very different from home. The La Fundidora products are handmade in small batches using traditional methods, ensuring quality and flavor and there are no preservatives, artificial flavors or sweeteners, they only use fresh ingredients. We recommend for gifts “The Legend” a pack of three salsas; Fresca, Fuego and Humo and “The Party Pack” which consists of Fresca, Ambar and Luna. Either three pack (or all six if you want to be invited back to your friend’s house in the Hamptons) is going to be a memorable gift especially for the foodie in your life. ABC Home is one of the top destinations in New York City for artisan home goods. What originally started as a carpet and rug store eventually grew into presenting other home decor categories such as textiles, glassware, tableware, bedding and more. The holiday season at ABC Home is especially magical. The artisan holiday decor and decorations are some of the best in the city, especially their ornaments. We had a hard time choosing a theme much less an ornament. So we decided to recommend the Deep Sea Octopus Ornament since a “Under the Sea” tree is bound to be a colorful, beautiful and fun tree. AEDES is one of our favorite artisanal perfume boutiques in New York City. When we want to find highly curated fragrances we go to this jewel box of a boutique. AEDES perfumery is dedicated to exclusive, artisanal scents. Established in 1995 in New York's West Village, it relocated to the Lower East Side since 2018 presenting an array of small international brands besides their own AEDES DE VENUSTA. We immediately knew an amazing gift would be a room scent diffuser. We fell in love with the scent of Miller et Bertaux’s In the Temple Scent Diffuser. Miller and Bertaux’s In the Temple is a soothing woody fragrance that soothes stress. Its duo cedar-sandalwood, patchouli leaf is made for fans of mystical incense. The Local Artisan Guide loves recommending books as gifts especially when it’s purchased through independent book stores. Our third holiday gift guide this season is dedicated to Kids and Pets! You can be the most cynical adult alive, however spend the holidays with children and your Grinch heart will have no other option but to grow three times its size. We also included pets in this blog because they are one of our greatest sources of joy and love and deserved to be spoiled in the holiday season (well, all year round really when you think about it). We picked five gift suggestions that we hope you will not only love for your nearest and dearest but will inspire you to do the work of actually shopping small and shopping local, not only for your holiday gifts but for all year round shopping. That is the main goal of our gift guides.
With the kids and pets gift guide we focused on small, independent brands that have a mission and a story. We included different categories and price ranges. Like all previous gift guides, there is an online store and you just need to click onto the captions for the link. We hope this starts the love and passion for hunting the treasures out there that smaller and more artisanal brands provide.
Toys for children (I bet you thought this one was for the pets) are of course at the top of this list. Mon Ami (“my friend” in French) is a child accessory brand established in 2018 that specializes in products that create a delicate balance of beauty, comfort, and emotional connection—creating treasures to cherish, gift, and grow up with. Besides toys, Mon Ami have many child related accessories. It was hard to pick our favorite plush toy so since it was the holidays we went with Jingle Holiday Dachshund, the cutest pup around! With his smart holiday sweater and festive Santa hat he is one super snuggly dog stuffed animal. Gifting this sausage puppy stuffed animal to a little one dreaming of owning a dog or the dachshund lover in your life will guarantee a lifelong childhood friend. Books are always a favorite gift suggestion from The Local Artisan Guide, especially for children and definitely for the holidays. We always highly recommend going to independent, small book stores and McNally Jackson is one of our favorites. If you have a small local independent book store in your neighborhood it is a treasure trove for gift giving for both children and adults. We highly recommend “The Night Before Christmas: Classic Original Text Paired with Modern Art” by Hayden Goodman (Illustrator) based on the original story by author, poet and scholar Clement C. Moore. Hayden Goodman is an African American painter, illustrator, and character artist. She works primarily in gouache to paint witches, fairies, goblins, and other mysterious creatures from mythology and folklore. For this rendition, “On Christmas Eve, a little girl is woken by the clatter of Santa's reindeer on her apartment building's roof. When jolly Saint Nick comes down her chimney, she and the other children in their apartment building get swept up in a Christmas adventure.” The book features beautiful bright illustrations filled with diversity (much needed right now) in this modern twist of a classic tale where every child can see themselves in it. It is surely to become a holiday tradition and keepsake for the family of the child who receives this magical book.
MOMA DESIGN STORE - LE CHOCOLAT DE FRANÇAIS GALATIC CHRISTMAS PRALINE BALLS BOX
Chocolate will always be a holiday gift favorite, especially for children. We love MoMA Design Store because their gift merchandisers search the world for special brands that they feel will lift us up in beauty and artisanal traits. It is an amazing destination for both the brick and mortar and the online store to source spectacular holiday gifts that are easily accessible. A brand we love from France is Le Chocolat de Français which MoMA offers in their collection. This fun decorative tin contains nine milk chocolate praline balls. All Le Chocolat de Français products are made in France, using traditional chocolate-making techniques, with 100% natural ingredients. Contains 3.9 oz of chocolate. The tin is certainly a keeper and let’s face it, this is a gift for the kid in all of us.
And now for the pet portion of our program. Let’s face it, treats are the best thing that can happen in a pet’s life (besides the love of a good human). It is important to avoid and support brands that go against our values and are detrimental for the environment or the population. With that we are advising what products you should stay away from for Mother’s Day and offer some gift ideas that are win/win for mom and the planet.
ETHICAL CHOCOLATE BRANDS
Bringing mom chocolates on Mother’s Day is a popular gift for mom, unfortunately many of the world’s most popular chocolate brands have been found to not be ethical in their in farming of cocoa and have been complicit in the worst form of child labor including slavery. When buying chocolate for mom (or anyone) you should investigate to see if the brand is Fair Trade and and sourced without child labor issues. Because there is not enough demand for Fair Trade certified chocolate the issue of child labor and slavery are still prevalent. Because of poverty there are 2.3 million children around the world at risk of being in slavery because of these large chocolate conglomerates. Here are some of the fair trade logos to look for in ethical chocolate brands.

New smaller chocolate brands are are calling themselves “from bean to bar” which as they pride themselves on for being ethical. Slave Free Chocolate recommends chocolate brands from all over the globe that are ethical and some of our picks from their recommendations are as follows:
An unforeseen result of the recent monstrous tariffs that were slapped on China was vendors and factories from China and parts of Africa claiming to sell high end luxury brands directly from the manufacturer, skipping the middle man and providing the customer with an inexpensive product. These “manufacturers” were on Tik Tok and other social media formats hawking their wares and as a result many fell for counterfeit products.
There is some truth to the narrative that many high end brands have their products made in China. As a former production manager for handbags I saw high end labels in factories my brands were being produced in. A legal loophole on how an expensive high end luxury brand can have their products produced in Asia or Africa and still say, “Made in Italy”, or “Made in France” is to have the product mostly made in these factories and then “finished” in European factories. Many European factories have closed in the last few decades as producing in Europe is not financially feasible to produce a profit. Many of the factories that remain in Europe are more artisanal and produce small batches of products. The larger volumes are made in China or Africa and then finished in factories in Europe.

The products that have been shown on Tik Tok and social media are from counterfeit factories that produce goods at much lower prices because they use a labor force that includes child labor, trafficked individuals, unsafe working environments, unregulated factories and are run by criminal cartels the world over. So please do not buy mom one of these handbags thinking you are gifting her the “Birkin Bag” of her dreams. Instead look to gift your mother a local and ethical brand whether it is an apparel brand, or handbag and accessory brand. Better to give your mother a beautiful gift that is made with Fair Trade regulations, original designs and no child labor. Some small, local ethical brands we recommend for mom are:
Sending flowers to mom on Mother’s Day is a gift she will always love and appreciate. 1-800 Flowers is a large conglomerate of florists however we recommend either sending her from your local or her local florist or even better is a CSA that delivers flowers. A CSA for flowers will deliver her organic flowers from a local farm and the subscriptions usually run by season. For what you would usually pay for one bouquet, your mother will receive a few bouquets for a great price and it will help a local farm. Win/Win!
In these days of boycotts for brands that either are unethical or donate to organizations you might not feel are part of your value systems shopping small, local brands is a great solution. Your mother will get a gift that is more unique and thoughtful and a local brand will be supported which in these days of trade wars will probably the difference between their business surviving.
It’s time to consciously shop for all your products not just for Mother’s Day. So do the research and see what brands align to your values. Boycott those that don’t. Nothing makes capitalism work better than a good old fashion boycott.

It’s quite a grand start and our most expensive in this gift guide but we fell in love with Guzema and the unique jewelry pieces they create. Guzema was founded in 2016 in Ukraine by Valeriya Guzema. Guzema started out her business by melting the gold teeth her grandfather bequeathed her. From there her business has grown and has represented Ukrainian culture and arts. We adore the “Light My Fire” fire extinguisher pendant which comes in both white and yellow 18k gold (chain length is 68 cm). It’s definitely a conversation starter and a piece that will eventually become a family heirloom.
Sabah, which means “morning” in Turkish was founded in 2013 by an American expat who missed the leather slippers he wore while working in Istanbul. By collaborating with Turkish artisans who have been creating the leather slippers since the late 1800’s. Years later Sabah’s come in all colors and are made for men, women and children. Frassai is a fragrance brand founded by Argentinian Natalia Outeda who uses the fragrance as an olfactory journal of her adventures and travels. When it comes to finding affordable ways to shop with artisans for the holidays one of the best ways to support artisans and give special unique gifts is through artisanal foods.
In every city and most small towns there are food markets and speciality food shops that carry small brands of delicacies that make great gifts on their own or in carefully curated gift baskets. On a recent trip to upstate NY, The Local Artisan Guide stopped in the small, charming town of Chatham, NY and took a nice leisurely stroll down their main street and looked into their local shops of small fashion brands, toy stores, wine and cheese shops, jewelry boutiques, gift shops, yarn, linen and a few more food stores, bakeries and much more to get ideas for holiday gift giving.
We are focusing on one shop in particular, Bimi’s Cheese Shop, which besides its moniker is so much more. Bimi’s provides quality, delicious cheeses from both near and far, however Bimi’s also has an in house bakery creating artisanal bread, beverages and gourmet grill cheese sandwiches (I had the sourdough blue cheese and drunken onion grill cheese sandwich which was mouth watering). The shop also sells a well curated assortment of other brands which includes; spices, olive oils, chocolates, jams, jellies, cookies, maple syrup and more. Most of these items are made locally usually by hand or through skills passed along for multiple generations. Some of the items are very traditional, such as a local maple syrup or more gourmet such as a jelly that has been elevated with exotic spices.
Separately these items make beautiful, affordable gifts. An artisanal chocolate from France made with ingredients from around the world with stunning packaging would make anyone happy to receive this holiday (or any day). To give multiple items in a small or large gift basket is even more special. Your food gifts would not only be unique, special and greatly appreciated but also help small makers around the world. I have to add that day trips driving to these smaller charming towns and speciality markets in the city are actually a pleasurable experience (where you will end up going home with your own carefully curated gift basket).

Chocolat Moderne - New York deserves special mention because they create delicious chocolate that is also vegan. Here we see a hand-painted and entirely edible Rouge milk chocolate heart box that includes six of Ghyslain’s Valentine hearts (all different flavors from French Vanilla to Coconut Rum). Presented in a window box with red satin bow and watercolor tag, this makes for a special Valentines Day gift on many levels.

Brooklyn based jewelry designer Bernice Kelly's is originally from Northern Ireland which has had an enduring influence on her approach to jewelry design from Ireland’s rugged landscapes and the warmth and tenacity of its culture. She has designed a collection of jewelry for men called “The Men’s Room” where her signature Signet rings date letter collection utilizes a strong British tradition which requires precious metals to be officially stamped. Recently whilst on holiday in the Scottish Isles, besides admiring the spectacular beauty of Scotland and the Inner Hebrides, The Local Artisan Guide was lucky enough to stumble (okay we took a ferry to the Island of Mull) upon the town of Tobermory.

Tobermory is a picturesque town on the Island of Mull (part of the Inner Hebrides) with colorful houses, restaurants and shops lined up on a marina with rolling green hills and trees all apart of an incredible vista. Tobermory Bay was originally a fishing port that has since become home to small businesses, restaurants, small hotels and artisanal shops that offer a range in products including; jewelry, chocolates, soap, pottery, cheese, leather goods, a distiller, art, local fashion, stationary, baked goods and more.
As you get off the ferry you follow the crescent shape road known as Main Street around the marina with multicolor buildings dotting the landscape. While walking down the street and entering the various shops one observes that many of the shops not only carry local products but many of the products are produced in the shop itself. There are also many products made from local artisans near by on the island.

Slightly off Main Street as soon as you depart the ferry you will come upon the studio and shop of An Camus where Stuart and Helen Orr can be seen working on their glass products, knick-knacks and stationary.
The workshop of An Camus is located in the shop itself where you see many items in the process of being made.
An Camus offers many representations of the sea and wildlife.
Its typical to see Stuart and Helen hard at work creating their wares.

Isle of Mull Soap Co. is a quaint soap shop founded by husband and wife team Stu and Sophie who create soap inspired by the culture of Scotland and all the many natural and native ingredients you can only find in the Scottish Isles. Established in 1798, Tobermory Distillery is the only distillery on the Island of Mull and one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland. The distillery is unique not only because of its picturesque location but because they offer not one but two distinctive single malts.
The shop in the visitor center of the distillery offers their entire selection of scotch and whiskey.
There is even a formal tasting room that you can make an appointment to experience.
Tobermory Distillery offers more than just whiskey at the visitor center. Here you can purchase, hats, t-shirts and even soap made with whiskey!
Is there such a thing as a “wee dram”? We think not, especially after you taste their whiskeys.
